Carefully preserved in the library is the volume American Furniture: The Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery, the first director of Winterthur Museum. Among the furniture forms highlighted by Montgomery is a unique three-tier stand, or dumbwaiter, made about 1810. According to English cabinetmaker Thomas Sheraton, the dumbwaiter . . . is a useful piece of furniture, to serve in some respects the place of a waiter, whence it is so named. Hickory Chair Company's artists have adapted the design of the dumbwaiter in the creation of this side table. The result is a piece of furniture that is certain to become an important part of today’s living environments that emphasize unparalleled quality and beauty. Top and shelves in cathedral ash veneer. Top has quarter sawn ash crossband. Dark Walnut is the standard finish. Optional finishes available as 6486-70.
